How to Send an e-Transfer

Paying by Interac e-Transfer for the first time? This is the whole process, from your banking app to a paid order, in about two minutes.

Why e-Transfer

The way Canadians already send money

Interac e-Transfer is the standard way Canadians send money to each other, directly from one bank account to another. If you have ever paid a friend back for dinner or sent rent to a landlord, you have already done this.

It works from every major Canadian bank app: RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, plus credit unions and online banks like Tangerine and Simplii. The money moves bank to bank, so no card networks are involved, there is nothing new to sign up for, and nothing to install beyond the banking app already on your phone.

Before you open your bank app

Everything you need is on your order page

When you place an order, your confirmation page and email include the three things a transfer needs. You never have to guess at any of them.

01

The exact total

Your order page shows the exact amount to send, to the cent. Send exactly this number in a single transfer, no rounding up or down.

02

The recipient email

The address your transfer goes to. Copy it straight from your order page rather than typing it out; one wrong character and the transfer never arrives.

03

The security answer

If your bank asks you to set a security question, the answer is simply your order number, shown at the top of your order page.

Closed the tab? Your order page is one click away in your confirmation email, or via Track order.

The walkthrough

Six steps, in any banking app

The screens look slightly different between banks, but the flow is identical everywhere.

  1. 01

Open Interac e-Transfer in your banking app. It is usually under Transfers or Send Money.

  2. 02

Add the recipient email from your order page as a new contact.

  3. 03

Enter the exact total from your order page.

  4. 04

If your bank asks for a security question, use any question you like and set the answer to your order number.

  5. 05

Review the email and the amount against your order page one more time.

  6. 06

    Send.

The rules

Three things that keep your payment from bouncing

  • Send the exact total, in a single transfer. Partial amounts and split transfers cannot be matched to your order.
  • Leave the message and note field empty. Transfers that arrive with a note are rejected and must be resent, which delays your order.
  • Send from the same name as the order, when possible. A matching name is how your transfer gets connected to your order quickly.

After you send

Then you are done

Most transfers confirm within a few hours during business hours. The moment your payment is received you get an email, and your order page updates automatically from awaiting payment to preparing.

There is nothing else for you to do. No screenshot to send, no confirmation number to forward, no follow-up message needed.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

My bank says I am over my daily limit

Daily e-Transfer limits vary by bank and account, so check yours before sending. Split transfers are not accepted, so do not send your total as two smaller transfers. Instead, write info@deer.supply and we will sort it out with you.

I sent it, but nothing has happened

Check the recipient email first. A typo means the transfer simply is not received: it is not lost, it just sits unclaimed at your bank. Cancel the transfer in your banking app, then resend it to the exact address on your order page.

Keep going

Watch your order move

Once your transfer is on its way, your order page is the single place to watch it confirm, prepare, and ship. If anything feels unclear at any point, support is a message away. And as with every guide here, this is general research context, not medical advice; for anything about your own health, talk to a licensed healthcare professional.
